Cygwin: X11 on Windows
Cygwin/X: X11 on Windows

Cygwin/X is a free X11 application that takes the place of such applications as Exceed. This document will help you
install and configure Cygwin/X, as it can be tricky to do for the first time.

Begin by going to Cygwin/X. On that page you will see an icon that says "Install Cygwin/X now". Click that icon and,
when prompted, save the file.

Once the download completes, double-click the file that was downloaded to start the installation:

The Cygwin Net Release Setup Program will begin. Click Next.

Under Choose A Download Source select "Install from Internet" and click Next.

On the Choose Installation Directory window, leave everything as default and click Next .

On the Select Local Package Directory window, leave everything as default and click Next.

On the Select Your Internet Connection window, leave as default (Direct Connection) and click Next.

For Choose A Download Site, select "ftp://ftp.planetmirror.com" and click Next.

It will now connect to the ftp server and download the initial setup packages. This may take a moment.

Next, you will see the following Select Packages window.

Scroll to the bottom of the window. Next to X11, click where it says "Default". It should now say "Install"
(it may take a moment for it to change). If you click too many times, you will see other options such as
"Uninstall" and "Reinstall". Just click until you see "Install". Then click Next.

The packages that are needed will now downloaded and installed. It is normal for this step to take some
time. Monitor the Progress window occasionally to make sure things are still happening.

Finally, on the Create Icons window, configure as you would like and click Finish.

Cygwin is now installed. The next step is to ensure that your ssh program is configured to tunnel X11 connections.

If you are using SSH Secure Shell, launch the ssh client and click "Edit" at the top of the shell. Select "Settings"
at the bottom of the Edit menu. On the Settings page, select "Tunneling" under "Profile Settings". Select "Tunnel
X11 Connections" at the bottom of the right-hand pane and click Ok.

Other ssh programs will need to be configured similarly. If you cannot figure out how to turn this feature on
on your program, please email computer support and I will be happy to assist you.

Once X11 tunneling is configured in your ssh client, launch Cygwin by clicking the icon on your desktop if you have
one, or by browsing to "Start -> Cygwin -> Cygwin Bash Shell. The shell will launch:

Type "startx" at the prompt, and hit enter:

The X windows shell will launch. Minimize it to get it out of the way, but don't close it completely.

Now, from your ssh client, type "ssh -X kira.gfdi.fsu.edu", replacing kira with whichever server you need.
Once you have logged in, simply run the program as needed. It should pop up a GUI on your desktop.
